Description & Historical Narrative
The Heart of Birdseye depicts the original Birdseye Mountain Lodge, a structure that once stood as the central gathering place of the Birdseye Mountain Ski Area in Castleton, Vermont. More than a building, the lodge served as the social and operational heartbeat of the mountain during its most active years in the early 1960s.
Founded in 1961 by Bill Jenkins and opened for skiing in 1962, Birdseye Mountain was a locally built, community-driven ski area—designed, engineered, and operated by those who lived in its shadow. The lodge was where skiers gathered to warm themselves, share stories, adjust gear, and look out across the slopes that Jenkins himself helped design. It anchored the Meadow Lift, the North Peak T-Bar, night-skiing operations, and the surrounding trail network that introduced generations of Vermonters to the sport.
The building no longer exists today, making this portrait both a historical document and an act of preservation. Rendered in a painterly style consistent with the Birdseye Mountain Art tradition, the lodge is shown resting beneath the mountain it once served—timber-framed, snow-settled, and quietly resolute. The composition emphasizes permanence over motion, memory over spectacle.
