Description & Historical Narrative

The Meadow Lift, Birdseye Mountain preserves an authentic moment from the early years of Vermont skiing and the formative history of Birdseye Mountain. The Birdseye Ski Area was founded in 1961 by Bill Jenkins and officially opened to the public in 1962 as a locally built, community-driven ski area.

This image documents the Meadow Lift, a surface lift measuring approximately 750 feet in length with 150 feet of vertical rise. Remarkably, the lift was designed and engineered by Bill Jenkins himself, reflecting a hands-on era when ski areas were shaped directly by their founders—guided by practicality, land knowledge, and ingenuity rather than large-scale commercial design.

The Meadow Lift played a central role in early Birdseye skiing, serving as a learning ground for beginners and a vital connector to more advanced terrain. To the north of this lift stood a 40-meter ski jump, underscoring Birdseye Mountain’s place not only as a recreational ski area, but as a site of winter sport ambition and athletic challenge.

This work stands as a tribute to the craftsmanship, vision, and community spirit that defined small independent ski areas of the early 1960s. It is both a historical record and a reminder of a time when ski mountains were built by hand, shaped by the land, and sustained by the people who loved them.
