🏔️ HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION

North Peak T-Bar — Birdseye Mountain Ski Area (Early 1960s)

This artwork documents the North Peak T-Bar lift at Birdseye Mountain during the early 1960s, a period when small, community-driven ski areas formed the backbone of American skiing culture. Birdseye Mountain was an active and ambitious Vermont ski area, featuring rope tows, T-bars, night skiing, snowmaking infrastructure, and long-standing lift corridors that shaped generations of skiers.

The North Peak T-Bar served as a vital access point to higher terrain, carrying skiers through dense spruce and hardwood forests toward open runs that challenged and refined skiing skill. The lift infrastructure—simple, rugged, and purposeful—reflects the ingenuity and resilience of early ski operations before modern detachable lifts and resort expansion.

Birdseye Mountain was more than a ski hill; it was a gathering place, a proving ground, and a symbol of Vermont’s outdoor heritage. Many skiers who trained on Birdseye went on to explore larger mountains throughout the Northeast, carrying with them the discipline and respect learned on its slopes.

Today, remnants of this history still exist on the mountain—lift corridors, towers, and foundations—quietly preserved by time, snow, and forest growth. This artwork stands as a visual record of a once-active ski culture that helped define winter life in Castleton and the surrounding region.

🎨 ARTIST’S DESCRIPTION

By Edward J. Davis

North Peak T-Bar, Birdseye Mountain captures a moment of winter stillness layered with memory. The snow-covered lift tower stands quietly against the slope, its mechanical purpose softened by time and snowfall. The surrounding evergreens cradle the structure, reminding us that nature ultimately reclaims all working landscapes.

In creating this piece, I wanted to honor not just the machinery, but the people—the cold mornings, the sound of skis on packed snow, the lift cables humming, and the quiet pride of a mountain doing its work. Birdseye Mountain shaped generations through effort, patience, and respect for the land. This lift carried more than skiers; it carried ambition, family tradition, and the joy of winter.

This artwork is part of my ongoing commitment to preserve Birdseye Mountain’s history through fine art, ensuring that these stories remain visible, tangible, and honored for generations to come.
